Dear Mr. Salyers,
I believe that Composition 1 has changed the way I view myself as a writer. From the first graded assignment, I gained a new sense of confidence in my writing that I haven't felt in a long time. When I constantly had pen pals to critique and edit my writing, I also had a network of friends that encouraged me to write, even when I didn't quite feel like it or when I couldn't think of anything to write. The assignments in ENGL 101 have encouraged me to continue writing, as they forced me to write narrative stories again.
In addition, I have learned quite a bit about my writing style and what I can improve upon. It's not easy to tell myself that I need to change the way I do things, but I know that some things about my writing do need a tune up. For example, my level of detail could use quite a bit of work. Turning in an assignment that was nearly double my requirement was a new low for me. I didn't think I would overdo it as much as I did in eighth grade, when I turned in a ten page paper that was originally supposed to be five hundred words. Through this class, I have learned that my vast details can be unnecessary and boring; it's nice to know that I'm not the only person with this issue (I'm looking directly at you, J.R.R. Tolkien).
Overall, I love Composition 1 and the things that I am learning in it. The discussion-based atmosphere is fantastic for the way that I think, and the coursework isn't too overwhelming for me. I think I am progressing as both a writer and a student in your class, and I hope that the future will hold even more pleasant bubble-bursting surprises.
Sincerely,
Student
